A University of British Columbia engineer and a team of U.S. researchers have made a breakthrough utilizing spray-on technology that could revolutionize the way optical lenses are made and used.
As cool as it is to be able to replicate just about any object you want using a 3D printer, the things you create can still look really rough, because the printers are not high-resolution.
The nanoscale artificial "atoms" that constitute the metamaterial prism shown here were designed to exhibit a "negative index of refraction," which skews the light to the left, different from what would have been expected from any natural material, which have a positive angles of refraction.
Significant research in quantum optics, metamaterials and plasmonics, and nanoscale optical manipulation have been recognized with presentation of awards by the International Commission for Optics (ICO).

This method is based on the direct doping of dielectric matrices with plasmonic nanoparticles and enables the fabrication of volumetric three-dimensional materials through a non-chemical/direct process. The concept is based on utilising matrices with lower melting temperatures than those of the admixed nanoparticles. In this way, a variety of nanoparticles—of several different sizes, shapes and chemical compositions—can be introduced into the matrix, even when other doping agents such as rare-earth ions are present. This method may enable manufacturing materials on-demand for particular applications.
